The Road to Wellville
MonaVie seems to be all the rage. About a month ago I heard a man talking on the radio about the benefits of this health juice. He said the drink has 19 different fruits but the most active ingredient is the acai berry from Brazil. A friend of mine has been drinking it for the last two weeks and she swears up and down the street that she feels better. Her energy level has risen, she feels her complexion looks better and her overall wellness has improved. She gave me a bottle to try. It comes in a bottle similar to a wine bottle. You’re supposed to drink one to two ounces twice a day. When my friend held her fingers up to show me how much she was drinking in the morning and at night, it was the equivalent of a cup. I told her no wonder she’s energized. I can barely get passed a sip. It doesn’t really taste bad. It tastes like thick, berry syrup that needs to be diluted; you need to shake it up because it’s oily and it reminds me of balsamic vinegar. Maybe it would be better if I dipped some bread in it; just kidding. The guy who sold her the case from which my bottle came is trying to convince her to sell the stuff. She’s not interested and neither am I. The premise behind MonaVie, I’m gathering, is that it not only promotes a healthy well-being, but entrepreneurship, which promotes economic freedom. Which I’m all for but why do I keep thinking of Amway???
I’ll stick with my pomegranate juice, which I probably drink too much of.
Along with my daily iron supplement, I’ve been taking a wellness vitamin. These tablets are the size of a horsefly, and they want you to take three tablets every three hours at the first onset of a cold, otherwise one to two tablets daily. I have to get a full glass of water to take these things. What I don’t get is this: when people take pills, why do they jerk their heads back? I chuckle every time I see someone do this. The pill is not going to automatically fly to the back of your throat if you jerk your head. That’s why you have to drink a ton of water. Anyway, while I was at the Vitamin Shoppe getting the tablets, along with a box of Emer’gen-C (raspberry) and a box of pomegranate tea, I was talking to the sales associate and he was telling me about oil of oregano. I was telling him how sick I was over the holidays, flat on my back Christmas day, and he said he was down too. But he’s been taking oil of oregano and it’s helped him tremendously. When he started describing it (and showing me that it’s on sale), I told him it sounded a lot like echinacea. They say with echinacea you’re supposed to take it at the onset of a cold or flu. No, I say you have to take it before you think a cold is coming on, because if you wait it does you no good. That window of opportunity is very small. He said oil of oregano was much better. I told him that I’ve spent enough money and that I would have to come back and try it. In my head I was thinking that I have to go do research on it first. Plus, it’s not a good idea to take a lot of different stuff.

This is the first year I’ve tried using the Emergen-C packets, but when everyone around me was getting sick I seemed to pull through. Too anecdotal to mean much, but I think I’ll continue to keep them on hand!
